WORLD WARRIORS 2002 CREATED BY: Mirage23 I CAN DOWNLOAD THIS AT: http://www.phoenix42.com/fm.htm OVERALL RATING: 7 (Good, but has some flaws) OPENING COMMENTS: What could best sum up this game? Well, think KoF mixed with Street Fighter...mixed with about five cups of coffee. GRAPHICS: 6 Well, the graphics are almost all taken from KoF, so no complaints here. Well...actually, I DO have a few complaints... 1: The characters are almost all from KoF, so why take Billy's sprites from Real Bout Fatal Fury? Bit of a nasty change in style. I'd excuse it if the characters were edited, but they aren't. And they're almost all supposed to be from KoF. 2: Speaking of almost all characters from KoF, Basara isn't. Why put him (yes, HIM) in there? It's supposed to be a sort of KoF alternate universe, according to Mirage. Ruins the style pretty badly. 3: I'll be frank: THE STAGES SUCK. They're scaled, and scaled horribly. You're even able to walk on some things that you shouldn't (i.e. lava in Rugal's stage, water in Basara's stage, cliffs in Whip's stage). 4: Another thing I'll be frank about: THE WIN PORTRAITS SUCK. This isn't Mirage's fault, however...it's a flaw in Fighter Maker 95. I thank the almighty Jehovah that ASCII changed the color limit to 256 in Fighter Maker 2nd Round instead of FM95's 16 color limit. SOUNDS: 8 Almost all taken from the KoF games, so not many complaints here. All of them sound perfect, with the exception being Rugal's intro. Hint, Mirage: Rugal's CvS voice is different from his KoF voice. The voice in the intro could have sounded better...yeah, yeah. I'm dissing my own work. So sue me. It doesn't sound announcer-ish. (Note to self: Get voice-acting lessons) MUSIC: 10 No complaints here at all. The music fits each stage perfectly. I find myself humming along with the theme in K's stage, and rocking along to the theme in King's stage. PLAY CONTROL: 7 All moves have been reduced to Quarter-circle motions, which is a bit of a nasty shock for those who expect a hard-core KoF game... It really just doesn't feel right for KoF. But I'm supposed to comment on what it IS, not what it's supposed to be. And it IS fine, because it allows you to pick up different characters easily and get used to them quickly. My only qualm is the charge-down-up motion for anti-air. Mirage, if a person jumps in on you, you rarely have time to do a charge motion! PLOT: N/A I'll get right back to ya when I find one, chief. OTHER STUFF: 6 Question: Is anyone able to make a final boss without having him being ungodly cheap? Apparently, Mirage isn't one to answer that question. I've seen Basara and Mr. Big whip out supers without needing power at all, and Big's techniques are pretty powerful (his blast super's last hit is even unblockable!). Basara is hard. Big is cheap. Ralf = Major fun. Mirage majorly revamped Ralf's moves, and he's now a fun fighter to play as. Whether you're punching the tar out of your opponent's face, or bouncing your opponent from wall to wall, you'll find yourself using his QCB K move a lot. At the beginning of this review, you'll notice I said "Think KoF...with ten cups of coffee". Why? OVERKILL SUPERS. Play as almost any fighter, and you'll see their supers are majorly beefed up. MAJORLY. These supers are fun to beat the shiznit out of your opponent with, because they are PURE beatdown-ness. If you get low on life, then the beatdown process is doubled, making the opponent feel MAJOR hurt. Even MORE fun are the Lvl 3 supers. If you thought the normal supers when you're low on life was overkill, wait till you see the Lvl 3 babies. Some supers take about 30 seconds for you to see the entire beatdown process, and almost all of them are pure eyecandy. My personal favorites are Ralf's and Yuri's, King's being a close second. However, these supers sometimes take a long time, so make sure you have at least 30 seconds left on the timer! That being said, there are some glitches in a couple places. The majority are being when you run out of time when you're right in the middle of a super, but Mirage already commented on that. Some others are minor things (like finishing a person off with Chris' throw, and Chris glides off into space). They aren't much to detract from the game, but they bring the score down. CLOSING COMMENTS: If you're a fan of overkill, get this. If you like quiet, simple hypers, avoid this game. This game puts MvC2 to shame in the flashy supers section. Enough said. PLUS+: Overkill supers. PLUS+: Ralf = Fun. PLUS+: Music is pure r0xx0rness. MINUS-: Final boss is cheap. MINUS-: A wee bit glitchy. MINUS-: Sucky stages.
